Aid and Attendance Program
The VA’s Aid and Attendance program is a valuable pension benefit aimed at wartime Veterans, along with their spouses and eligible surviving spouses.
Designed to assist Veterans who need help with fundamental personal care tasks, known as Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), this program covers crucial activities such as bathing, dressing, and eating. The Aid and Attendance benefit steps in as a crucial resource for Veterans who require ongoing care but are financially unable to meet these needs. This benefit can pay for the services of a home care aide, who provides daily assistance to the Veteran.
Aid and Attendance: Criteria for Eligibility and Reimbursement
To qualify for the Aid and Attendance pension, a Veteran’s service history during specific war periods and their financial status are considered. Veterans must have served at least 90 consecutive days, with assets not exceeding $150,538 (as of 2023). An honorable discharge is a prerequisite for eligibility. If a surviving spouse is involved, they must have been married to the Veteran at the time of the Veteran’s death.
Once approved, the benefit is directly paid to the Veteran, granting them the freedom to use these funds for their care requirements.
