Our Caregivers: The Heart of Our Service
Certification and Training
We primarily hire Certified Home Health Aides (CHHHAs) as per New Jersey State preference, alongside Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) and Home Health Aides (HHAs). A remarkable 90% of our senior caregivers in North Jersey are licensed, showcasing our dedication to professional excellence. We strongly encourage and support our HHAs in their journey to certification, offering tuition reimbursement as a testament to this commitment.
Our caregivers are not just trained; they are sculpted into experts. This is achieved through rigorous skills training provided by college educators, complete with testing and oversight. This ensures that every caregiver is well-versed in both the technical and compassionate aspects of care.
Background Checks and Assurance
Every caregiver undergoes thorough background checks, reference vetting, and is bonded and insured. This stringent process guarantees that the individuals entering your home are not only qualified but also trustworthy and reliable.

Assessment by Multi-Disciplinary Teams
Our unique approach involves assessments by three departments – Nursing, HR, and Scheduling. This triad evaluates the caregiver’s personality, commitment to our mission, and their compatibility with clients. We focus on ensuring that our caregivers are not just capable but also passionate about fostering progress in health and independence for our clients.
Skill Evaluation and Case Orientation
Our caregivers are meticulously evaluated on their skills and oriented towards specific cases, ensuring a seamless and comfortable transition into care. We strive to eliminate the customary ‘honeymoon period’, allowing for a fluid and worry-free introduction to the caregiving relationship.
Uninterrupted and Informed Care
Scheduling and Continuity
We schedule at least two qualified caregivers for each case, mitigating any service interruptions due to unforeseen events. This practice also ensures that our clients and their families are not overwhelmed by an ever-changing roster of caregivers, fostering a sense of familiarity and stability.
Introduction and Training
Each caregiver is introduced to their client with a Registered Nurse (RN) present, ensuring a thorough understanding of the care plan, environment, safety issues, client preferences, and medication reminders. This comprehensive orientation is crucial for personalized and effective care.
Ongoing Support and Evaluation
Regular RN Contact and Oversight
The RN maintains regular contact with caregivers, providing oversight and ensuring consistency in care. With mandatory check-ins and documentation reviews, along with in-home evaluations at 30 and 60 days, we maintain the highest standards of care.
Scheduling Coordination and HR Support
Our Scheduling Coordinator works closely with caregivers to ensure smooth scheduling and high morale, while HR stays in contact to keep them aligned with state requirements.

2026 Caregiver of the Year - Lourde Leon
We are absolutely delighted to nominate Lourde Leon as our Caregiver of the Year. We are so fortunate to have her with us and represent the Mission and Values of 2nd Family! Lourde is an amazing human being and a truly exceptional Caregiver. She demonstrates utmost compassion, sincerity and consideration in everything she does. She continually Blesses her Patients and their Families with her warmth and dedicated servant’s heart. She shows people that they are important, which has a meaningful impact on people’s lives. It improves how they view themselves and their environment. Lourde shares her kindness with every encounter. She also shares her soothing personality, unwavering attention and solid support for the needs of her Patients. This shows in her smile, is heard in her voice and flows through her hands. Lourde is an extraordinary care provider who definitely sets a high standard. Lourde was hired to fill an immediate need for primarily Spanish or Italian speaking Caregivers. At the time, we were admitting Clients who were afflicted with advanced stage dementias. Coincidentally, some had reverted back to the languages of their childhood. They couldn’t speak English any longer. This is extremely stressful for loved ones as communication becomes a priority issue. The Clients present with frustration and despair, which becomes a danger. As the Families searched for solutions, 2nd Family was able to accommodate. We sought appropriate Caregivers and found Lourde, who quite frankly, is just an excellent person in every way. Lourde was impressive at interview. Though she was limited English speaking, she managed to shine via translator and convinced us of her ability to handle these types of cases with ease. The Clients she was assigned to were tremendously comfortable and trusted her from the beginning. The Families were especially grateful because they could enjoy being with their loved one at home once again. Lourde always puts in extra effort so that she can communicate with Family, Friends and other healthcare disciplines in order to be a Patient advocate and also to ensure seamless care. Lourde has worked very hard on her English language skills. However, she has always had the amazing gift of communicating. Lourde provides fantastic care for all types of Patients with all types of needs. She has the unique ability to identify changes and expands her knowledge to improve Patient outcomes. Not only is Lourde an outstanding communicator, which is a core skill, she continually works to secure skills regarding the use of advanced equipment. In fact, one of our Clients uses an ocular transmission device to communicate. Lourde now confidently speaks English, but as an added measure, she has enabled the translator on the ocular device so they both can share more laughs together! Our Patients and Families enjoy superior care and continually praise Lourde for her talent. She gains a deep connection with people. She brings so much joy to our Patients, and she truly becomes a part of their 2nd Family.
Lourde is the perfect example of role excellence. She deliberately and methodically reviews all aspects of a case. She asks thoughtful questions and includes possibilities of future changes to a Patient disposition. She is proactive and prepared to manage any task that might be introduced. She works collaboratively with the Care Team and respectfully alongside Families. She assists Family Members to know that they are providing the best care for their loved ones, which is a modest and benevolent gesture. Multiple Families have said they “are so thankful for her” and “we will never part with her.” And we wholeheartedly agree. Lourde has been engaged in additional education and is expected to transition into a training role, eventually. With her dedication, demeanor and proficiency, she will be a valuable mentor for other Caregivers. She is a role model who consistently cares for our Clients with multiple complex needs. She has a history of accepting challenging cases and always with positive outcomes. Some consider these Clients to be a “heavy lift”, but to Lourde it appears to be a privilege, and this belief is reflected in her smile. She sparkles like a star and shares her warm and loving light with all. Lourde reflects one important truth when she says, “I love my job”. Lourde Leon is our Caregiver of the Year and is surely a model for Caregiving in our time.
