Arriving as an immigrant from Italy at the age of 5, I have always grown up with family at the center of my universe. I have fond memories of many family gatherings as a child embedded in my heart, and that was a tradition that I was eager to continue as I raised my own children. Loud, chaotic family events, full of laughter, food, and great memories are at the core of who I am and the foundation upon which I’ve built my professional career.
In our culture, the elders were always considered the Matriarchs of the family; they were always treated with respect and looked to for wisdom and love. When an older member of the family grew ill or became unable to perform normal activities of daily living, the rest of the family would happily band together to help each other.
In an increasingly busy world, many family members in today’s culture are simply unable to “pitch in” due to the strains and stresses of life, but the desire to care for those loved ones in need, to provide love and respect, is still present. This family heritage, instilled in me for almost six decades, drives my desire to provide senior home care in North Jersey to those in need with dignity, respect, and good old-fashioned family values. Our Story The Motivation of Family
My name is Carole Apkarian, and I have been a RN for almost 30 years and have worked in a variety of health care settings including cancer care, emergency care, addictions, long-term care and education. Through the years, I’ve witnessed the distress suffered by families resulting from prolonged hospitalizations of loved ones because help with home care was not readily available. Poor outcomes placed a tremendous burden of grief and guilt on a family. Sadly, my family also had this kind of experience. My mother had a musculoskeletal disease and died in a nursing home.
After my mother’s death, I became a strong advocate for timely patient discharge and for aging in place. I’ve worked closely with Case Managers whose goal was to quickly get patients back home, if possible. Currently, I am the Associate Director for Nursing Education at a local college, as well as an RN and LPN Instructor. In this role, it is a blessing to teach the evidence that supports patients who can remain in their homes with proper assistance for as long as possible. My goal is for more people to age comfortably at home, as is the desire of so many. I believe with all my heart that this best practice promotes greater wellness and improves the quality of human lives.
