We are thrilled to announce Mary D’Angelo Orio as the Caregiver of the Year award in recognition of her exceptional dedication and compassionate service as a caregiver. Mary has been working with her client, who has dementia, and has made a profound difference in his life through her support and understanding. Mary’s client is a brilliant man with a remarkable history, having played a vital role in designing a Navy Yard. Recognizing his rich background and the value of his experiences, Mary has gone above and beyond by creating opportunities for him to connect with her family members who have also served in the military. These have allowed him to share stories from his past, helping him maintain a sense of purpose. Furthermore, Mary has shown exceptional advocacy for her client’s rights. One impressive example of her dedication is when she took the initiative to look up his rights to vote with someone there to assist him. Understanding how deeply important this was to him, Mary meticulously researched the necessary steps to ensure his vote would be counted. This task, challenging for someone living with dementia, was handled with tremendous care by Mary, highlighting her commitment to supporting her client’s autonomy and dignity. She was nervous that any roadblocks on voting day could impact her client and he would become agitated. The research she did beforehand made the day go extremely smoothly and brought a sense of joy and autonomy to our client. He cast his vote and she assisted him along the way. Mary’s ability to blend compassion with practical assistance sets her apart as a wonderful caregiver. She is not only providing care but also enriching the life of her client by helping him engage with his passions and connect with his heritage. Her efforts are a testament to her heartfelt commitment to those she serves. We wholeheartedly celebrate her achievement of this honor.
