2024 Caregiver of the Year - Yves "Laure" Joseph

We are thrilled to announce Yves “Laure” Joseph as our 2024 Caregiver of the Year. Laure has proven to be such a compassionate, dedicated, and reliable caregiver. She leads by example and by communicating well with other caregivers, families, and our management team. Laure has dedicated families she cares for but will also fill in almost anywhere if we were to need her in a pinch.

 

She has become like a 2nd family to countless families in our region. Her longest client had late stages of early-onset dementia and as the past two years progressed. We watched her health decline, but unfortunately her husband became more confused and struggled with performing his ADLS. She helped our client’s husband order groceries online when getting out to the store was a struggle. She also helped this same spouse deal with the emotional toll of caring for a spouse with early-onset dementia. She helped him to face the reality of needing to take care of himself as well as we watched his health decline. Laure’s tough love, compassion, humor, and candor make her the perfect blend of what families need during a difficult time.

 

I know this personally because I watched Laure care for my own parents at a time when we faced our first health crisis as a family. My Mom fell and broke her ankle, heel, and wrist and needed surgery on all three. She was unable to walk, and no longer could bear weight on her left arm and left leg. My Mom moved in and we all faced a level of stress we had never dealt with as a family. Around the same time my father had an outpatient procedure that ended up causing him to have complications for several weeks. In the end it became too much for us to manage alone. Both of my parents had to move in with us temporarily and we faced the “sandwich generation” stress we often talk to other families about. So we finally called in Laure and she relieved so much stress.
She had both of my parents laughing and smiling again. They felt a relief because the stress they placed on my family was causing them to feel guilty and ashamed. Laure was the perfect buffer and showed a level of professionalism, grace, and was always able to lighten the mood. It became clear why all of our families love her so much. Those families that don’t know her as well when she “fills in” are immediately asking if they will get to see her again soon, or they ask if Laure could be their permanent caregiver. Our scheduling team has been quoted as saying, “If only we could have 100 Laures, you might not need us anymore.” I know they are referring to the fact that Laure can handle almost any situation and can handle caring for people with such varied personalities.We can’t thank her enough for all that she represents as a caregiver for 2nd Family. She embodies our values and we are proud to have her on our team. This is a picture of us together at our holiday party.
